On the Ruby Anniversary of THE FALL OF BATAAN and CORREGADOR:
I am not here to help celebrate a defeat, but a Victory!
For the Fall of Bataan was a victory. True, the American-Filipino forces had been defeated in the flesh, but NEVER vanquished in the SPIRIT on that fateful day of April 9, 1942. So, after the Fall, we fought again and defeated the enemy. And in our victory, in contrast to the enemy, the Japanese, we were true Christians — compassionate and forgiving.
But foremost was the great patriotism, heroism, and love of God and Country of the Filipino soldiers in the Battle of Bataan which made the whole world take notice of the Filipinos. Since then, the world has given great respect to the Filipino people.
